If it’s August, can Fall be far off?

We are beginning to plan for the Fall – and with that comes planning the Fall Calendar. It’s a little early yet, we know, but we thought you’d want to mark your calendars for a very special event: Marcia Ceppos, owner of Tinsel Trading, the fabulous trim, ribbon and button emporiums on West 38th Street, will be at Knitty City on September 29th from 6 to 8 PM to sign her new book, Beautiful Bedrooms with Ribbons and Trips. Who among us has not dreamed of beautifying and personalizing our most private rooms? Now is your chance to see how it’s done by a professional. Marcia has promised to bring along some of the designers who worked on her book in order to show how easy it is to create one-of-a-kind designs for home décor. Don’t forget – Sept 29th!

We are in contact with Annie Modesitt, the yarn heretic herself, and the designer of some of the knitting world’s most innovative patterns. Annie is scheduling a tour to promote her two new books: “Twist & Loop” and “Men Who Knit – and the Dogs Who Love Them.” She will be appearing at Knitty City in October, so keep reading your updates to learn about the exact date.

Melissa Leapman, one of the knitting world’s most prolific designers is also in our sights. She has two new books coming out in the fall and we’re hoping to snag this busy New Yorker for an appearance at Knitty City, so stay tuned!!!!!

Support Groups at Knitty City: Starting in September, there will be a monthly support group meeting on the 2nd Thursday of Every month. This support group is sponsored by the national collation for Women with Heart Disease. To sign up, please contact Connie Crosson at 212.414.5057, or speak to Pearl when you are in the store.

Knitty City Class News:

This Fall, we will be conducting our usual schedule of How to Classes, which will now be conducted as a series of three 2-hour sessions. All classes will be $125.00 and will have a 10% discount for all materials bought. Subsequent students will pay only $100.00 for each additional class they enroll in. We will be holding the usual How to Classes and in addition keep watching for announcements of special one-of-a-kind classes in color theory and special projects.

Current Trunk Shows at Knitty City:

Classic Elite sent us a selection of wonderful summertime knits – all made of their classic cotton Provence. Do stop by and take a look at these garments for instant inspiration.

Brown Sheep shipped us some fun hats and toys in order to illustrate the felting and versatility of their wonderful wool. Anyone interested in a felting workshop at Knitty City? Do write in and let us know and we’ll see what we can do to make it a reality.

In the meantime, keep “tuning in” for more information. Our next round of sales starts on August 15th!!! So expect to hear from us then!

Happy Summertime Knitting! Come see us at Knitty City soon!!

Hooray, Hooray! It’s May – and outdoor knitting will soon be here to stay! That’s our Knitty City Ditty, welcoming the warm weather and letting our customers know that soon we hope to be able to offer them a real outdoor spot for their knitting – The Garden @ Knitty City! This summer, we intend to have our backyard all tidied up and ready for those of us who love knitting outdoors as much as we do indoors. We plan on having a garden party to celebrate the opening, so watch out for the announcement in your mail box. Talking about Summertime – please be sure to stop by and check out some of our wonderful new summer time yarns – perfect for knitting and crocheting projects for warm weather clothes, accessories and home décor projects – as well as the new crop of spring babies that we are noticing everywhere. When Jean Durabin and Nancy Nichols (of Cascade Yarns) were here, they showed us a new line of cotton that is perfect for summer weight shawls, tops and kid’s knits. It’s a quick knitting yarn – using a size 8 needle – and it comes in the most delicious summertime colors. We have also just received a big shipment of Nicole, a new Adrienne Vittadini yarn, which knits up on size 6 needles and is a neat blend of warm weather fibers that deliver a cool result for knit or crochet projects. (We are currently making some fabulous placemats with the stuff and will have a sample in the store very soon.) Don’t hesitate, stop by and check this out – since it’s selling quickly. While in the store, be sure to check out our selection of Provence, Classic Elite’s silky looking mercerized cotton. This yarn is as near perfect as any cotton yarn can ever hope to be with sumptuous colors and a texture that make me dream of year-round projects.

Please remember to mark May 21 on your calendars for an exciting Event at Knitty City. Wendy Johnson, knit designer, teacher, writer and blogger extraordinaire (www.Wendyknits.net) has written a new book: Wendy Knits – My lifelong Adventures in Yarn. Join us (and Wendy) on Sunday, May 21st, from 12:30-2:00 pm, as she regales us with her insights on all aspects of the yarn and knitting world. From the virtues of knitting the perfect sock, to the compulsive need to stash exquisite skeins of yarn in every crevice of one’s home, she’ll cover it all with her usual wit and empathy for the yarn-obsessed. As you know, at Knitty City, we’re devoted to the writers and designers who make this industry the source of enjoyment it is. Next month we have some wonderful things planned – including an appearance by Nicky Epstein and a special Family Day event (June 4th) with Sylvia Jorrin, author of "Sylvia’s Farm". Melissa Matthay will make a guest appearance on August 2. Some Exciting New Things at Knitty City: The Knitty City Book Club. We are interested in finding out how many people would like to join us for a once-a-month book discussion. There are so many wonderful knitting related books on the market that it might be great fun to get together, with our needles and discuss them. Probable time would be the last Thursday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00. Selections could include "Sylvia's Farm", "Opinionated Knitter", "Needled to Death", etc. We will schedule the books so that you'll have plenty of time to read them. Please email me (pearlchin@aol.com) and let me know what you think. Or just drop by and leave word at the front desk. If we have enough people interested, we’ll make it happen! Free Massage Time at Knitty City Our local Equinox gym has offered to provide free massages to all attendees on May l7th, from 6:30-8:00 PM, when our men’s club meets. Be sure to stop by and take advantage of this generous offer – and find out more about Equinox while you’re there.

Archived newsletters:

WELCOME TO KNITTY CITY… ….and the month of March! So far, the old adage is holding true. March is coming in like a lion and with it our sales of cold weather fibers and yarns continue to be strong. People are making scarves and hats, babies are being bundled – and our customers are using the wools and yarns from Knitty City. Thank you again for your support and “warm” welcome.

As some of you may have noticed, this month’s window features the book Knitting Out of Africa, the beautiful new publication by Marianne Isager and Interweave Press. The publisher was also generous enough to lend us a selection of the sweaters from the book and they are with us on loan until April. We are so excited to have them that we felt we had to do something special in their honor. So, this Saturday, March 4th, from 3-6 pm, we will be showcasing the work and art of some local fiber artists. We will have Dawn Nellis, a gifted quilter who teaches quilting arts. She will demonstrate her work and discuss some of the inspiration that informs her creations. Also in attendance will be crochet artist, Willena Nanton, the President of the NY Crochet Guild and Sahara Briscoe, author of the blog, Sistah Craft and a talented knitter and teacher. All will be on hand to discuss the art and culture that inspires their work

Our current classes are going strong, but it is never too late to sign up for a new one since we are conducting them on a rolling basis. We have the usual beginner classes as well as a class for intermediate knitters. Check inside for the details. In the months to come, we will be adding new classes, such as Knitting for Baby (scheduled in May) and a series of one-day workshops, as well. In addition, we’d like to do a kid’s workshop to coincide with the April School break. Amy Bahrt – the talented author of Creature Comforts loves working with kids and she’s offered to conduct a workshop! Be sure to look for those announcements in the store and in our emails as soon as details are firmed up.

If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to add your name to our mailing list. You can do so when you visit our store by signing our guest book.
